Thank you so much for publishing this important book. The spin-doctors who work for Poilievre have gone out of their way to paint him as the saviour of Canada, the exact Trump equivalent of MAGA, and it is downright frightening. I worry that people are too gullible and nobody has the time to research facts anymore, and that the hatred of Trudeau that Poilievre has created will be enough to put him in control. I will do what I can to promote this book in hopes that at least some people will read it. Sadly, however, the people who will take time to read it are most likely the ones who have already figured this stuff out. Still, huge kudos to Biblioasis for doing this.

“The spin-doctors who work for Poilievre have gone out of their way to paint him as the saviour of Canada, the exact Trump equivalent of MAGA”. Or, to placate people worried about a maga equivalent, the false reassurance that that’s just leftist scare-mongering. That PP is a moderate. And I’m afraid some confused voters will buy it.

This is brilliant, Dan -- both your piece and the concept for Mark Bourrie's book. It will be seized on by very large numbers of Canadians disturbed by the prospect of Poilievre in power. Don't be surprised if you have to reprint super-fast. A book like this can change a lot of minds. It can be a game-changer. It will be avidly read by supporters of all parties -- including Conservatives. This may be ancient history, but in 1971 Walter Stewart's SHRUG: Trudeau in Power was loved by Cons and NDPers alike and hated by Liberals, sold 40,000 copies in hardcover and paper, and I believe had some influence on voters in the 1972 election, in which Pierre Trudeau lost his majority and had to settle for a minority government, supported by David Lewis and the NDP.

Thanks, Roy. Our hope is that this book reminds people of what PP has both said and done. Hardline cons might not like a lot of what he says, but I think many others will find much to chew on in these pages. I hope others find half as much.

One of the least read dialogues of Plato, called THE STATESMAN, is all about the sort of thing we can compare the science and practice of statesmanship. Plato goes through different images used to speak of statesmanship (craftsman, architect, shepherd, etc.) and concludes that the best one is that of the weaver. My point: Brooks is not the author of the metaphor, Plato is (as well as the image of the "social fabric" that the weaver creates, repairs, strengthens, etc.). What Brooks may have invented (but I don't give Brooks much credit for anything personally) is this idea that the opposite of a weaver is a ripper. It would be interesting to review all of Plato's STATESMAN wondering what is the opposite of a craftsman, an architect, a shepherd, etc. And what this line of thought helps us conclude as to what good statesmanship consists in. But that's another topic entirely.

I will definitely buy this book and read it with great interest. But as others have pointed out, I’m afraid it will reach primarily the people who are already prone to dislike him.

You mention Poilievre’s long history of using YouTube to promote himself and his ideology. I suspect this is what radicalized your friends, no? I believe whoever controls the public narrative has the power, and this is gained through social media (I’ve given up on the corporate media). So any possibility of using social media alongside your book to reach a greater readership and audience?

My book isn't an attack piece. Anyone interested in knowing what is being offered to them should read it.

The title is a strong word. It comes from an idea by conservative New York Times columnist that there are now two types of politicians, rippers -- rather self-explanatory-- and weavers, people who try to build consensus. As for the material in the book, it's all from the public record. I'm a lawyer and a historian. My name will not be on a hack job.

The “fear” of a CPC government in Canada has to be compared to the PM who calls our country a post-national, genocidal colonial state & who put the flag at half mast for months until the Iroquois Nation told him to raise it, so they could lower it to recognize their Veterans! The Liberals have been incredibly divisive on every issue they touched and have tried to use all of them for their electoral advantage! Our country needs to rid itself of the eco-grifters and the institutional corruption of the Liberal party and once again a country we can have pride in!

Agreed. I just don’t think Poilievre is the man to do it.
